How Inclusion NB Supported Hoby on His Culinary Journey
At 21 years old, Hoby Haughn is already making a name for himself in the culinary world. Living independently in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and working at the well-loved Herring Pub, his journey has been one of taking initiative, and community support. Thanks to the guidance of Inclusion NB and the dedication of team member, Gillian Akagi-Kerr, Hoby has been able to turn his love for food into a career.
A Passion for Cooking, Sparked Early On
Originally from St. Andrews and having lived in various places—including a stint in Florida—Hoby’s love for cooking started at a young age. Some of his earliest memories involve helping his mom sell crepes at the local market, a hands-on experience that taught him the magic of making food that brings people together. That passion only grew when he got his first job at King Street Pizza, a pizza place in St. Andrews.
“I love the people I have worked with,” says Hoby.
Since then, pizza has remained close to his heart. One of his biggest dreams is to open his own pizza shop, where he can craft unique, delicious pies inspired by his experiences.
Building Skills at NBCC
In February 2023, Hoby connected with Inclusion NB, who helped him explore his next steps in turning his love for all things culinary into a profession. With our support, he enrolled in the Culinary Program at NBCC in April 2023. Over the next year, he honed his skills in the kitchen, gaining hands-on experience and building relationships with fellow students and instructors.
Graduating in June 2024 was a proud moment, marking the beginning of his professional journey. But beyond just learning recipes and techniques, Hoby grew in confidence, independence, and his ability to navigate the fast-paced culinary world.
From Classroom to Kitchen: A Career at the Herring Pub
Shortly after graduating, Hoby landed a position at the Herring Pub, a staple in St. Andrews known for its welcoming atmosphere and great food. With Gillian and Inclusion NB’s continued support, he transitioned smoothly into the workforce, gaining valuable real-world experience in a professional kitchen.
“Hoby is such a team player, and he really takes initiative” says Gillian, “often times he even is keeping me on track”, she laughs.
His work ethic, and ability to connect with people quickly made him a valued team member. No matter where he goes, Hoby has a way of forming meaningful connections, creating a support network that continues to grow.
An Inclusive Life in Community
When he’s not cooking up delicious meals, Hoby enjoys rock climbing—a hobby that challenges him in new ways and provides a balance to his work life. He thrives on adventure and enjoys pushing himself to new heights, both literally and figuratively.
With a strong network of friends, coworkers, and mentors, Hoby has built a fulfilling and independent life for himself in St. Andrews. His journey so far is a testament to his resilience and the power of community support.
“Inclusion to me is like a tool in life that has helped me work and get through school. And now I am done. Everyone works together,” Hoby says.
Looking Ahead
With dreams of opening his own pizza shop one day, he continues to work hard and gain experience in the industry. Inclusion NB remains by his side, offering support when needed but always encouraging his independence and growth.
Through determination, and the right support system, Hoby has found his recipe for success. His journey is an inspiration, showing that with the right mix of just enough support and opportunity, anything is possible.
